Without You

Postby *shinytuna* » Wed Jun 25, 2008 11:15 pm

At the end of this song, does everyone else hear the instruments playing that sound like an orchestra "warming up" ? Not really playing music, just kind of "humming"? (sorry, hard to explain but hopefully you know what I mean). I was curious if it was on every cd out there or not...
Anyone ever hear the band talk about why they included this?
It's really strange because whenever I am playing that song in my car (w/my ipod hooked to the car charger), the ipod always kicks off at the end of it...it just goes to static and I have to unplug it, and plug it back in. EVERY TIME! It freaks me out man!

Yeah, my copy of Diorama has that ending on. It always seems to go on for aaaaaaaaages, and then World kicks in. I dunno, it's weird.

It is definitely on every copy of Diorama, although it wasn't on the Without You single. Personally I think it's just in keeping with the whole surrealism concept of the album, and it works.

I always thought it sounded like a washed out Hammond b-3 organ. I could be very, very wrong however. But I've always been a fan of that little segue. Its very captivating.

Yeah it's definitely a Hammond.

It's weird, if i sit there listening and waiting for that segue to come on it seems to take ages but just listening in the background it flies by so quickly.

I love the little things like that in albums. They tie the whole thing together so it plays as something a little more than just 11 songs on a disc. Like the long pause between AATY and the little ending piano motif, sure they could have used that space for another song but it adds a lot of dynamic to the album as a whole...
Reaching for that thing.

Agreeance.

It was between asking about this or the baby sound in AATW when i sent my question in forthat dvd thing, I thought they'd be more likely to answer the AATW one. I kind of take it as representative of the "new" Silverchair. Daniel had always said he like Without You because it has elements of what silverchair were and what silverchair are, and i think that sound is like crossing through into the new.

Sweet, I had that one right. I'm glad my ears aren't in the decline I thought they were.

One of the least spoken about bits that I'm a fan of is the piano peckings, what sounds like foot steps and reverse cymbal bit leading into The Lever. I think it adds a twisted, beautiful moment of tension before the explosion of the the snare.

But back to the topic of Without You, I've always wondered if in 2000-2001 Daniel lost a bet to a friend and had to work in the word "Polystyrene" to the next record he put out. It's such an unusual word, especially in the context of a rock song. I'm probably just projecting what would have to happen for me to use polystyrene in a song. Either way, he nailed it.

You could very well be right! That's a cool way of looking at it.

I actually had to look the word up when I first heard the song
and it just made me laugh...I mean, how random really! But at the same time, so perfect...I mean what's the feeling you would get if someone handed you a big bright foamy hat? Pure joy I'd say!! But it'd be a "shallow" kind of happiness I suppose..>I mean it IS only a hat...(that melts in the sun no less). Was he not really in love with whoever he's singing about here? Like he doesn't want to live without them, but he knows there's no real substance to his feelings?
purely speculating of course. who knowz.

dan explained that part during an interview. he said something about a hat you get for your birthday party and now that the whole thing does not really last. something like that ...
