Here's my story again. Blardy blah blah blah

If I think back it was when I saw Freak on rage (aus music show), which would've been late 1996 or early 1997. I was too young to get into them during frogstomp (same as Nirvana at the time) as I would've been like 8 but I remember seeing the frog poster everywhere. I once heard that Daniel broke his nose in a stage diving incident (where everyone moved out of the way) and laughed because I wasn't a fan and had never heard their music.

I saw the Freak video with my sisters and we were like 'Whoa they grew up! This is the best thing I've ever seen!'

Anyway that is about 11 years ago and I've been hooked ever since. It was so exciting seeing their new videos each time after freak because we hadn't heard the songs yet, and we were always very impressed. When I bought Neon Ballroom in year 7 I was like in shock it was so good. The videos are always great to watch but the ones for Neon Ballroom always got audible gasps at how sick Daniel looked.

After absolutely falling in love with Neon Ballroom I asked and asked and asked for it (being a broke 12 year old as you do) and I finally got it for my birthday (having being in the same month as the albums release) and when I got it I listened to it the first time and wasn't disappointed, more shocked but I listened to it again and I loved it. So I listened to it again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And before you know it it's 2004.

The only CDs I had was the best of (for emotion sickness) and frogstomp (because it was 2 dollars and the others were 15 a pop!) and I actually didn't like frogstomp at all.... I still don't besides israel's son. But I would always look at Diorama at the music store I usually went to and say "I don't recognize any of these songs!" But I was bold one day and bought it. I remember hearing across the night and going What.. the fuck?!?!
And skipping to the songs like without you and laughing at luv your life. I just wasn't used to happy... I was expecting an orchestra and distorted guitar and songs about insecurity and drugs.... but I get orchestra and songs about mules and tuna?

I am now on my 5th. That's right 5th. Copy of Diorama from too many plays, and on 2 of them the greatest view kept skipping and we can't have that!

My brother was a fan back in the Frogstomp / Freak Show days. After the band changed styles, he no longer listened. Because I was never aware of the release of Neon Ballroom, I was under the impression that the band was no more.

In late 2002 I started college where I became a DJ on our campus radio station. We were required to play atleast 3 things an hour that were on their Top 30 list. On my first show I was shifting through this Top 30, and came across Diorama. I was immediately attracted to the cover. I thought it looked odd considering the state that the band was in the last time I listened to them back in 97. On the CD was a sticky note that stated what songs can and cannot be played due to content. The first song listed was Across The Night, with liner notes saying that it sounded like something from a musical. While that confused me, I decided to give it a chance. I can still remember standing there in amazement, because this only wasnt what I expected, but completely different from everything that I had ever heard. For the next few weeks, I would play both Across The Night and the Greatest View each show. That was until I got myself to buy the album. From there I would play a bit of everything.

I do have to say, thats what really got me into the band. With 2 weeks time of me buying Diorama, I bought the other three CDs. And I have to say .. the only other moment like that I had with the band was half falling asleep in my bed and hearding Emotion Sickness for the first time. I literally sit up in my bed in a sweat.. It was remarkable, just like Across The Night but ina different way.

That is even though sometimes I claim that I shouldnt have gotten involved, but thats for a whole other thread.

I don't understand what couldn't be played due to content.

Not because of offensive content, but for unradio-friendly content.

Unlike actual music directors, college station directors dont get a listing of what songs need to be played. Instead, they have to listen through any CDs that come their way. Sometimes when an album needs to start getting air play, they will just skim through. This leaves them with some song options. The others arent forbidden to be played, but if you do then you do so at your own risk.

People that dont know the album wouldnt know if its safe content or not.

slick's story:

oh man, i had to wait for Diorama to arrive in the mail and it SUCKED! With YM, i just cheated and streamed it when i could. But with Diorama, i had really NO idea what to expect. i had heard a snippet of Greatest View (these were back in my dial-up days so i didn't bother with a full download) but otherwise I was in the dark.

I ripped open the package and stuck that bad boy in my player  and I was nearly FLOORED. Loved it all from the very beginning! I remember just being shocked and overwhelmed by the fact that that sound was coming from silverchair! I remember my first impression was "wow, really Elliot Smith" but i think that was only because of the melodies and highly-evolved songwriting. Amazing.

And, about 29043398557943875 plays later, its still amazing 8)

I've always thought the demo version of Across The Night was VERY Elliott Smith, Figure 8 era. Probably because it has such a baroque pop feel to it.

I've been a Silverchair fan from the beginning, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of Diorama. I read Gizmo's diary and followed every step of the recording process. When they finally put some clips of the album up for a listen, I wasn't very impressed with some of the songs but I don't like to judge music from one snipnet or the bad quality sound you get from a PC (especially back then)...so I anxiously waited for my copy to arrive in the mail from Australia! To this day I still love the songs that I loved at first listen...Tuna in the Brine (my favourite from the beginning), Across the Night, Luv Your Life, My Favourite Thing and After All These Years. Others took a couple of listens like World Upon Your Shoulders, The Lever, Without You and Too Much of Not Enough...but to this day, no matter how many times I force myself to listen...I still don't like The Greatest View or One Way Mule. I don't hate them, but I definately skip those two whenever I listen to the album
