I cheated and downloaded most of it ahead of time before I bought it, but at first I wasn't that impressed. I thought I knew what to expect because the first songs I heard that I thought were on the album were one way mule and hollywood
The first song that I heard that wasnt a demo or live was the greatest view and I still dont really love that song that much. Across the Night and the lever I liked right away, and for the most part the rest of the album has really grown on me. Its probably my 2nd favorite album of theirs now.. I wish I wouldnt have downloaded it ahead of time now, though.. but it took so long to come out in the US
I forgot to add I've always disliked Across the Night. Sounded like they were trying to do a dumb brassy version of Emotion Sickness as the big opener.
I've had the same experiences as most people here. I would only listen to TGV and I dismissed the rest as weird shit. Somehow, I started liking one song at a time more at different times in life. Then I quit my job last summer, and in the 2 months I had off, I swear I listened to Diorama every single day.
It's by far my favorite chair album.
I still can't believe there was a point where I would skip past 'Without You'.
I got into the Dissos before I knew who Silverchair were. I checked out 3 Silverchair CDs from the library and listened to them in the wrong order (Diorama first) and decided I didn't like Freak Show or NB. I loved Across the Night but nothing else, and then I started liking Tuna in the Brine and then I guess I just slowly got into the whole thing, but I ignored the slower songs for a while.
Months later, I listen to it constantly. I'm still a bit obsessed.
I wasn't that impressed when I first heard Diorama. I always liked Without You and My Favorite Thing, but most of the others took a few more listens. I didn't even like One Way Mule, but I really love it now. I thought Diorama was a little cheesy on my first listen. It seemed very broadway-ish and very different for Silverchair. But with time and few listens, I really love Diorama. It's a beautiful album. I still think Luv Your Life is cheesy though and I often skip it.
My first experience with anything diorama was when i heard the greatest view. It was on one of the mtv websites, and it was the video. I already had the greatest hits and loved silverchair but when i heard this song it began my obsession.
I actually had the video on repeat for over 3 hours, no exaggeration. And i can usually listen to a song once at a time, but that song never did and never will go old!
I then bought the CD at HMV for like £18 cos it was an import! but it was soooo worth it!
I was a big fan of Neon Ballroom, so I decided to give Diorama a chance even though I had never heard it. Like many others on here, I couldn't get my head around the concept of the album. TGV, Without You, Luv Your Live, and After All These Years really stood out to me. I remember thinking "Why would they mix these beautiful songs in with a song like "One Way Mule?". Then each track began to slowly register and I could really appreciate the album as a piece of art and not just a CD. As soon as I realized that---I was hooked.
well lets see.....my first experience was me downloading the greatest view single and some other songs (live versions of hollywood, one way mule, etc.) at university. i got diorama when it came out, but i left it in its shrinkwrap laying on a chair for about a week before i had the courage to open it up and listen to it coz i was afraid i might not like it....but it turned out to be musical cocaine so i loved it

wow i really wish i could remember what it was like for me.
somehow i don't remember how i even ended up hearing about it or buying it. i mean, i was already a chair fan since 'tomorrow' so i was just buying each album as i heard about it... i must've just seen it in a store one day, that being my first notice that SC had put out a new one, and bought it.
i do remember firing up NB for the first time, parked in front of my boombox ready to listen to the cd all the way through, and the opening shots of Emotion Sickness blasting out... and i was like... fucking WOW... speechless. and i loved it. i hadn't heard anything about NB so i was just expecting a continuation of FS. but i'm glad it was different. it was like... silverchair grew in union with how my tastes were evolving.
i think it was a similar thing with diorama. in that, i was so amazed that the direction they took it in was exactly where i would want them to go after NB - even though i didn't even know that's what i wanted until i heard it. it just fit where my taste was headed, and yet directed me to this great new place. they kept the elements of NB i loved and mixed in new stuff i was so ready to hear.
i do remember that originally my favorite song was World Upon Your Shoulders... which is so funny to me now... I mean i still like it but it doesn't stand out as much anymore. i remember really loving Tuna too (which is now my favorite SC song of alltime) but thinking it was pretty damn complex and dark and challenging, and that i probably wouldn't be in the mood for it very often. it's certainly not background music.
god this was only in 2002 so i really should remember it better.
