"Slave" a rip-off?

Postby Israel's Son » Fri May 16, 2003 5:54 am

I was watching some grunge program on MTV 2 and in the background a song came on and I instantly said "That's Slave by Silverchair, cool!" Then a different voice was singing completely different lyrics which made me think that Silverchair might have ripped off a Helmet song or something. Does anybody know what the song could be?

I doubt it was a rip off....if it was just in the background, maybe it just sounded like Slave....I do that all the time (hear a song in the background and think it's a different song).

on an advert for one of those tv album things called 'while my guitar gently weeps', i think, there was a tune that sounded almost exactly like silverchair but i wasn't because they didn't put their name up when it played.

Hmmm....maybe another band was ripping off silverchair....or maybe they attempted to do a cover of "Slave" or something?

Could've just been coincidence also....Garbage's "I Think I'm Paranoid" apparentely sounds a lot like another song, and they claim that was purely by coincidence....same with "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" (also by Garbage).

The show was about early 90's grunge so I think the song was by 1 of the early grunge bands like Helmet or Screaming Trees. I doubt it was a Silverchair cover because the show spoke negatively about them. "We were waiting for new grunge superstars but instead we got Silverchair."

the song 'i don't know anything' by mad season has the same guitar riff as 'slave'. it's been around for years and it was in a topic on here a while ago where some other riff similarities came out

are you sure about that ukchairfan?

..In any case Israel's Son, the verse part for "Slave" is a very basic and typical riff, a guitar in dropped D doing a rhythm like that is typical of many bands (specially early chair stuff). In their early days Daniel use to claim to be a big fan of Helmet.... and buy any Helmet album and you will totaly see the connection to Freakshow and Frogstomp; It's not that Silverchair is ripping them off just taking influence. (By the way I recommend "Aftertaste" by Helmet)
I've also heard people say that Silverchair ripped off Black Sabbath for the riff in the song "sweet leaf" with the Chair Song "Leave me Out", but again its just taking influence from the bands you love...

does anyone remember that whole fiasco with Vinilla Ice's "ice ice baby" and it being a rip off of that song "Pressure"? That ended vinilla Ice's sad career.
"Trees have feelings too, and no one ever says 'hi' to them. Next time you're outside and see a tree, say 'hello'."
"We don't have any fans."
"Yes, I've got a girl's haircut. I'm in touch with my feminine side. We have this ongoing competition about who can get the gayest haircut. My friend Jason has just kicked my ass by getting a layered feather-cut like in the movie 'Pretty in Pink'."
"On this album I kind of realized I'm not a real man so it is time to go back to what I do. Real men don't sing falsetto."
"In America there's a lot more room to be like, run around and be silly."

Lol :) I remember watching Behind The Music about him and they mentioned it. Also, you know that song Bittersweet Symophony by The Verve? I remember reading that they took a sample of a Rolling Stones song and they sued them. I think the Stones won and got all the money from it. It used to be a huge hit a few years ago, with that stoned looking singer of theirs, Richard Ashcroft.
