first experience with diorama

Postby avedic » Thu Feb 22, 2007 4:51 pm

i'm curious what the first listen to this album was like for you all.
i was never really interested in silverchair before i bought diorama. didn't own a single album. thought 'tomorrow' was ok...but fairly generic. i was really into Tool at the time. still am...but not to the extent i was.

anyway...so in 2003 or so i was in a used record store and came across diorama...bought it. i listened to it once through and was less than impressed. for whatever reason it just didn't strike me in an special way. i sold it back the next day.

cut to a year later....i see it again in some random music store, and for whatever reason buy it again. this time i listen to it several times and pretty soon become obsessed with the absolute genius of the album. over that month or so i bought every other SC album i could and delved into them....however diorama is still worlds better than any of those other releases.

i always find it odd that an album i would easily put in the top 10 of all time would leave me so unimpressed as to sell it back when i first heard it. i've had the album now 3 years...listen to every song about once a week on average...for a total of roughly 150 full album plays...and im still not even remotely bored with it.

any similar experiences? :)

I was completely unimpressed as well, and it left me wondering the first time why I didn't ask for any of the others for christmas. But then I slowly got into it, starting with the heavier songs and moving on to Across the Night and stuff.

Just a random note, but I actually thought Tuna in the Brine was the worst song on the album, and now it is my favourite. It's the oddest album I have ever bought... really really good, but odd, because it is like that, I guess.

ditto. i used to always skip that and head stright to OWM and the lever. now it's the opposite. i rarely listen to the "riffy" songs and opt for the more experimental stuff.

on first listen i liked without you and too much of not enough, and already knew after all these years and the greatest view. it took me a few weeks to get into the other songs and it literally was about 5 months before i got into one way mule and tuna in the brine which i now love. At first it the whole album seemed too elaborate and a load of crap really but now I think it's a really special album and is the type of album i'd recommend to anyone even people who don't like silverchair- some of the music and arrangements are out of this world.

I remember the first time I heard the news about the release ... the name really stuck with me ... I thought it was a great title.
When it came out I had a gift certificate I needed to use quickly before the date expired, and I knew then what I was going to get - Diorama.

My first reaction was *sigh* Thankyou!! This is Brilliant! There wasn't a track which didn't stir the heart in some way shape or form over time ... Favourites changed, but I still have 'Diorama' as one of the top 5 on constant play, but, that poor first CD ...

I played it so many times - I carried it around with me - in the car, to other peoples places ... it was so scratched I couldn't see my own reflection on the disc - so I got another one to replace it. I still have the old one which is now used as a book mark ... and on occassions, a coaster

lol...yep. i'm on my 2nd copy. the first one skipped so much simply from the wear of carrying it around everywhere and playing it almost constantly.

I'm still on my first... 2 months and still going strong (sad that i've only had it that long, huh? I'm sad I didn't find out about Silverchair sooner.)

It didnt help me that my least favourite songs on the album are Across the night and After all these years because it started and ended dodgey imo. But now I've got into both songs a bit more and each time I listen it gets better.

Still not my fave Chair album though.
I wish the train would arrive at Young Modern Station.

I bought my 2nd copy last month. That's the first time I've EVER bought two copies of one album. It was so shiny and new. And the first/old one is so... it's like a kids toy.

Here is my story. I was a big fan of Neon Ballroom and then after that life got in the way and I didn't pay attention to music. Last week I heard a chair song on the yahoo radio I listen to at work and decided to see if they were still together. Since then I have bought 2 cds. Diorama just today. I love Without You and the Greatest View.

bought diorama when i got bored of all the crappy, generic music that was and still is around. thought what would be a good band to get into?? found the greatest view single i bought ages ago, listerned to it and the b-sides, went and got diorama and was blown away by the sheer creativity of it and the beautiful simple but yet complex songs. immediatly went and got the rest of the chair album and the rest is history, as they say. lol.
fave songs are.... without you, world upon your shoulders, tuna and too much of not enough, love the fact that on a first listern, you just dont know where the songs are going...then they change direction...just an awesome album..everyone in the world should be forced to own it.

i only liked tuna in the brine. i thought the whole album sounded like a disney soundtrack. i started to get into a few more of the songs. and then finally bought it just to have. i slowly got into, and now i love it.
i could NEVER stand across the night. but recently ive been findiing myself replaying it in the car. 'my favorite thing' is the most underated song on the album imo

I had a similar experience to most posters here. I originally heard The Greatest View on satellite radio, which is what alerted me to the record. I wasn't a big fan at the time, but I had the Best Of record and loved songs like Emotion Sickness, Miss You Love, Untitled, Israel's Son, etc. I asked my brother about the new album, since he was the one who piqued my interest in Silverchair in the first place, and he said the album "sucked". Never one to question brotherly wisdom, I forgot about the record until I came upon it by chance in HMV and decided to give it a listen at the listening bar...and I hated it, I guess because it took me by complete surprise. I was still expecting something in the vein of what I heard on the Best of Volume. Needless to say, I didn't purchase it, but on the ride home began to feel rather guilty (bear in mind these were my hardcore Evangelical days) about only supporting the band when they were depressed, but not supporting them when they were attempting to convey positive emotions.

So the next time I got my Columbia House pamphlet, I ordered it, and haven't looked back. Absolutely beautiful album in every respect. Favourites are Across the Night, Luv Your Life, My Favourite Thing, The Greatest View and Without You. Thank you misplaced sense of evangelical guilt! Oh, and my brother still hates it, though I've come to realize he's not too smart, especially since his musical interests revolve almost solely around indie and screamo tripe.
