Re: our friend {mad_man} (Michel) has passed away

Postby GreatBrittyn » Tue Jan 17, 2012 4:46 pm

the translation isn't perfect since it's written in Portuguese originally, still touching:

My brother had a very special talent as a musician. That is not something I say only because I am his brother and because I love him, but that is something that anyone who knew him recognized and admired him for. But of course that is not the only thing that made my brother a special person to anyone who was lucky enough to get to know him, his joy and wisdom have always been inspiring and his words always caused an impact on our minds and spirits.

My brother and I had planned a life together. We used to play together in our teenages but life had driven me away from music for a few years... my brother had always been more dedicated than I was, so he kept on practicing his musical skills and getting better and better. A couple of years ago, more or less, I took the decision to change my life, actually I decided to live the way I always wanted to live and not the way others wanted me to. My brother and his love for music were a great inspiration to make me take that decision, and he always supported me and felt proud for my courage to change the path my life was taking.

We used to rehearse together sometimes, we were practicing our skills so then we could be ready to send to people our feelings and thoughts, and not only with music but with any other form of art we felt more inspiring at the moment. He didn't see himself only as a musician, but as an artist.

I am not yet a musician as good as he was (and few people are), and certainly I will never play guitar as good as he did (he was already one of the best guitarrists in the world and with time he was definitely going to be the best), but I will improve more and more to reach the highest level of skill that my body permits...

He had his first album being recorded, there is some good material, and there are also more recordings on his pc and digital piano. Certainly I will continue all these projects, with the help from fellow musicians he wanted to take part on his album.

We also had already started the recording of an EP together, it is going to be something short, only five songs (three of them are covers), as an introduction to our duo, Zig & Mitch, the artistic name we had chosen for our careers. For this work he had recorded a guide track to Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine, what must be one of the few vocal recordings he had done, what is such a pitty because he had a wonderful voice and could reach very high notes.

But despite this terrible accident all these things were not in vain. When I said goodbye to my brother's physical body I only asked for his forgiveness for not being through his voice that people will get to know him, unfortunatelly it has to be through mine. I think he will forgive me for that, he always liked to say he enjoyed my voice. I really didn't want it to be this way, but there is nothing I can do to change that.

This situation reminds me of Aaron and Moses. Moses was a wise man and a prophet, but since he could not speak to people (he had a speech disorder) his older brother Aaron spoke for him. After this accident I will have to take this role as my brother's spokesman... I don't like it has to be this way, but if this is the role the universe has left for me, I accept it and will always do my best in honour to my brother. There are also people who believe it was the Archangel Michael (or Michel, it's a variant of the same name) who delivered the message from God to the jewish people that they should cross the desert, and then only the ones who were strong enough to bear such test of pain could reach the Promised Land; there might have not been only for coincidence that my brother had been called an angel dozens of times, from both people that knew him and people that didn't even know him... he was not religous, and I am not either, but we always understood these stories as metaphors of a reality that goes much beyond what we believe to understand.

Like I said before, my brother and I had planned a career together. We knew that every now and then we would like to have our own individual projects, because despite having interests and tastes in common we also have ideas we'd like to express alone or with somebody else... and what happened doesn't change that. I will always use the name Zig & Mitch in our works together, in the works he will have an active part; whether in spirit, memory or inspiration I know he will always be with me. I know there are going to be works I will prefer to express myself individually (it doesn't mean I don't count with my brother's presence), but in everything that involves music (especially rock, blues and jazz, his favourite styles), I will always use the name Zig & Mitch, because he is going to be playing beside me when I'm singing. I am sure this is how he wants it.

I have always been very close to Michel, we shared the same bedroom in our childhood and we used to play together until our early teenages. There was a time in our teenages we became a little separated from each other, but that was a period that each one of us was looking for self-affirmation so it is understandable. But in these latest months we lived together we were closer than ever before. We used to complain a little about our lives and how we have reached the point we were at, but after living together we changed a lot our opinions about that. We realized that our path couldn't have been better, because we are mature, sensible, loving, dedicated to what we do and we have so much energy and youth. We became wise without becoming old, and we reached that because of our experiences and the great people that took part in out lives. We have learned many good things from our friends and our family, and we also learned from people who had left a bad message in our lives, because they have taught us how not to be like. We used to feel bad for being born in Brazil, but Michel realized that was actually good, because now is just the time when the world is begining to want to get to know Brazil, and that would be favourable factor in our careers. He also reminded me the fact we speak an excelent english, which allow us to communicate our thoughts and fellings to the entire world. We have become optimistic with the future, of course we know there are still many problems in the world, but communication is making prejudice becomes something more and more stupid and dialogue is making people more and more enlightened.

In the night before my brother had flown, we talked about life and enlightenment. A few weeks ago my brother had concluded that when oneself reaches the understanding of what is life, it is time for this one to go, because this person had already exceeded the physical and material world. In this last night we talked about the metaphor of Ziggy Stardust (which he didn't know deeply yet), and confessed me he had the idea to write a book similar to that, in which the main character, when finds out he was in a state beyond everyone else, leaves the world... after that he told me he had understood that Quantum Physics, Astrology, Ying and Yang and Religions talk, in the end, about the same thing, which is duality. Lightness and darkness, to be or not to be, material and unmaterial, physical and spiritual... he didn't tell me many details (it wouldn't be an easy effort to put into words what he had discovered), but maybe he really did find out what is life, and that is why he had exceeded the physical world. What happened was mischance or fatefulness, I don't know, either way it was a terrible accident, but his enlightenment might be the reason why he was called to leave this world, that certainly fits on his belief.

I am sorry to his friends if I seem pretencious with these words. That was not my intention. I only wanted to express everything I feel and think at this dificult moment... and my love for my brother will always be my biggest motivation in this life.
I have to return some videotapes.

I read this on the silverchair facebook group page as well. I only chatted with him on the forums a few times, so I didn't really know him...However, it is always sad to lose a fellow big fan...My condolences go out to his loved ones! :(

I know, we started talking via pm on a daily basis for quite a while when I was posting there in 2006. We had some pretty interesting conversations, he spoke in detail about the accident his brother (briefly) mentions above...I remember thinking he had a great spirit and was a true survivor in the way that he handled it.

No matter how many times I read this post, I can't believe he is no longer with us. He will be greatly missed.

Wait...I don't get this. Are you talking about some other accident Michel had before he passed, that you talked to him about? I didn't see that in the long note from his brother.

Sorry, I got confused because I read the posts back to back. He actually mentioned it himself in the thread "some quick questions" I believe it's dated March 21, 2011, under hardest thing I've ever done. Like I said, I read one right after the other so after reading his brother's, I thought he had mentioned it as well.
