Ok BigVal, otherwise known as "fanboi" (because you said it was that simple) you win :-)
You win:
1. The being offended the most award (and the right to be)
2. The being the smartest person on this board award
3. The being attacked viciously by a fangirl award...which I clearly am (and unprovoked I might add)
4. The let's see who can use bigger words award

What else?? Oh yeah
5. The being a fan longer than anyone else (at least when it comes to fangirls) award
I'm sure there are far more things you're smarter about and better at than me (or any "fangirl for that matter) which by the way, was my mistake to take as a derogatory remark to begin with. Once again, you're right and I'm wrong. Forgive me for not knowing my place. Clearly I do not possess the sufficient brain cell count to continue sparring with you (that and I'm tired) therefore, I graciously bow out.

Yours truly,
Sunshine :-)

I think there is a thread for awards? didn't you all have a democratic way of voting for the winner? it doesn't sit well with me, you taking sole control that is!!

Well, unfortunately I don't keep up much with the awards section on this board but if I did, I definitely would've voted you wittiest :P

For the record I was a fanboi sure, back in the 90's when I saw them live during the Frogstomp, Freak Show & then Neon Ballroom era's but when I went to the 02 BDO what new stuff I had heard at that point (a few months before Diorama was released) sounded pretty ordinary so didn't even bother seeing them at that BDO.

Because I was such a big fan of the band I gave them a second chance and went and saw them at Clipsal 500 in 06 but they were so boring and were upstaged by Shihad. That was the end of the line for me and what I heard of Young Modern was simply embarrassing. Daniel had turned the band into The Dissociatives or something, just another run of the mill pop band. It still pisses me off a bit what he's done to Silverchair but I realised a long time ago they're gone now and never coming back.

I nominate myself for biggest fanboi (of the 90's).

I nominate blankfrank for biggest fangirl.

btw Who's willing to nominate me for smartest guy in the history of the internets?

I can understand and respect someone not liking the band going in a completely different direction, after all...everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I agree with you that their Clipsal performance was one of, if not their worst performance to date. I can't even bring myself to watching the youtube clips. However, every band has a bad night...a lot of bands have several bad nights. I've traveled long distances to see them live on several occasions and have been lucky enough to have never been disappointed.
I personally am a fan of their continuous evolution (as well as Daniel's) if that's what you're referring to by calling me the biggest fangirl, then I'll gladly accept the award because I'm here for the music and I truly do love it. I don't just follow it because I think Daniel Johns is hot, I have to respect a musician for their talent. And like I said...everyone's entitled to their opinion.
You don't even appreciate Daniel's work on My Mind's Own Melody? I don't consider that "pop" and even if it we're, pop music is a very broad genre.

Re: Daniel and Louise split

Well I remember reading some of the reports both here and elsewhere on SC's most recent shows (Groovin The Moo a couple of years ago) and they were described as appalling & laughably bad. They were getting torn to pieces on other forums from people that went to those shows so yeah they've certainly had their fair share of bad nights, although to be fair I don't remember a single criticism about Ben & Chris' performances, as you'd expect they've always been pretty professional as opposed to the diva out front who still thinks he's some sort of musical genius and not some washed up former rock star who hasn't written a decent song in a decade.

blankfrank, I do apologise if you interpreted my calling you a fangirl as me implying it's because you think Daniel is hot or whatever (he's not looking too flash in recent years it has to be said) but I meant as a devoted & diehard fan of the band who for the most part think they can't do any wrong like most fangirls/fanbois.

I assume My Mind's Own Melody is the theme song for this solo project with this director? I haven't listened to it properly yet but I did hear a minute or so of a song he played at some function about this project and to be honest it sounded like something left on the cutting room floor during the Diorama sessions. Very meh, but I will get around to listening to whatever song it was LAS emailed me in due course.

Well, as I mentioned...everyone has their own opinions and experiences and it's not my place to judge that. I am a diehard fan, that doesn't automatically mean I have loved or will love everything SC or Daniel have or will put out. I simply choose to concentrate on the good as opposed to the bad because I feel that the latter is FAR outweighed by the good.

As far as Daniel's onstage persona goes, I take it with a grain of salt and for what I believe it is intended to be...simply entertainment. I believe it's his least favorite aspect about being an artist and something that he's not completely comfortable with, therefore he puts on an act that probably gets misinterpreted by most people or misunderstood and taken for his offstage personality as well. Obviously I don't the man on a personal level, however I have had a brief encounter with him and he was nothing but gracious and down to earth...which is more than I can say for Chris or Ben, who were outright rude. Again, my personal experience.

Good or bad, I will always admire and respect Daniel for at least taking the chances he does with his music and being fully aware the entire time that he is risking losing fans along the way and attracting harsh criticism.
To me, that's a true artist

It's funny you say this as I met them too back in '99 and both Ben & Chris were jovial and quite willing to sign autographs (the two of them along with a couple of other guys were walking back from the main shopping street in the city here on the way back to the hotel) where as Daniel was up in his hotel room and came down the lift eventually by himself with 2-3 burly security guards swamping him (those 5-10 teenyboppers out the front are such a threat to one's safety) and I went up to him just as he approached the lobby aksed him if he could sign the 2-3 CD covers I had on me like the other guys did and he just scribbled on the top one and handed them all back to me, he barely even acknowledged me.

See I see it the other way I have no respect whatsoever for Daniel because I think he's a complete sell-out for trying so hard to write commercial pop songs with what was once a pretty good rock band. The world already has Coldplay, Muse etc for that kind of stuff if by the numbers pop is someone's thing. I'm not saying don't branch out from stuff like Frogstomp (which is pretty average really) but Freak Show and to a lesser degree Neon Ballroom showed how good a rock band they were until Ben & Chris essentially handed the band over to Daniel and with the lack of quality control he basically sold off everything good about the band and ran the stripped vessel into the ground.

I've got no doubt Daniel will reconcile with them and do a big cash grab comeback tour in a year or two when the dwindling size of the bank account starts hitting home but I hope they don't reunite as he's done enough damage to the brand as it is.

Sorry, I just have to jump in here. . . how in the hell are songs like "If You Keep Losing Sleep", "Those Thieving Birds/Strange Behaviour" and "All Across The World" commercial pop??

If they were really selling out, I'm sure they would've made music that would appeal to the mainstream, like Coldplay did with their recent album, which REEKS of mainstream pop ie, "Paradise" & "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall", doing songs with Rihanna.

Um, Straight Lines?

Reflections of A Sound and If You Keep Losing Sleep were both commercial pop just no one cared. They even played IYKLS on what was then one of the most popular commercial TV shows in Australia in Rove Live too. I'm even old enough to remember when Daniel said (during the Frogstomp/Freak Show days) they would never stoop to playing on Australian commercial TV in their career.

And they also played Without You and The Greatest View on Rove...those are not commercial pop. The Beatles are pop, but they're also unique. Jimi Hendrix was unique, but also pop, or "popular". That's where the word pop comes from: popular. Pop doesn't doesn't always mean crap.

Exactly, well said. And on that note, I'm leaving this conversation (at least for the time being) I've said everything I needed to say and made my points. Don't feel like arguing anymore, I just arrived in Berlin last night and I want to smoke a couple of joints and fully experience this AMAZING city!

I know I probably just set myself up for admitting that but I really don't care. It wouldn't be the first time lol
