102.1 The Edge, Toronto
August 25, 1997
Kim Hughes, interviewer: We have Daniel and Ben here [at Edgefest in Vancouver] from silverchair. From the Canadian bands here, who are you going to try and see?
Daniel: We only really know The Tea Party. Yeah, but they pretty much rock the house so we'll watch them.
Kim: They actually just got back from a tour of Australia and they were playing like... I guess the levels of venues, there's like pavillion and then another level, like theatre, is that the right word? Like pavillion level, and they did really, really great.
Ben: Actually, there's an Australian TV show called Recovery which is on Sunday mornings, it's like a music program and we saw them on that and really liked them. [Editor's Note: Isn't Recovery actually on Saturday mornings?]
Kim: Let's talk about something really interesting. You guys just worked on the Spawn soundtrack. Excellent track. Did you have a chance to, like, were you fans of the comic book at all? Is that how you got involved or were you just approached to do it and intrigued by the idea?
Daniel: We were intrigued by the idea. We haven't heard of it, really. We
just thought, you know, comics are cool so if they're gonna make a movie from
a comic, it can't be a bad thing.
Kim: So, who sort of lead the session more? Was it you guys leading or... in terms of recording?
Daniel: Well, we weren't in the studio at the same time [as Vitro], we just
went in and recorded the song and worked out an original version of it. Then we sent it off to Vitro and they remixed it in their studio and, yeah, that was it.
Kim: There was sort of a similiar idea with the Judgment Night soundtrack,
there they took rock and roll bands and sort of paired them up with hip hop groups and is this sort of the same thing except rock bands more with electronica. Did you hear that other soundtrack at all?
Ben: Yeah, we heard the song done by... I haven't heard all of the soundtrack but the one done by Helmet and House of Pain, we're heard that. But, actually, I think the same guy that kind of pulled it together has done both albums, so, yeah.
Kim: So how's your summer been going? Is this tour almost done for Freak Show or are you headed back home pretty soon? Or... what's the deal?
Daniel: We have one last tour after this of Australia and that's the end of
the Freak Show phase.
Kim: And have you already been working on some new songs? Do you see a new
album soon? Are you just going to relax and take time off?
Ben: We've got a lot of time off next year, just to chill out. Because by
then we're finished school. Just to chill out and do nothing and do the things we've wanted to do for the past 3 or 4 years. Yeah, but after that, then we'll start... actually during then we'll be writing, I guess. Then towards the middle of next year we'll record the new album. I guess, or probably towards the end.
