Havin' a Word
Metal Hammer

This month we interogate Daniel Johns of Silverchair. Robyn Doreian ask's load's of silly questions (and some serious one's.)

Metal Hammer: What is one personality trait you wish you had?
Daniel Johns: Patience. I get really impatient when things don't go right.

MH: Tell me about the last nightmare you had.
DJ: I was asleep in my bed and I woke up and opened all my drawers and inside each one was the skeleton of each memeber of my family. It was bad, and when I woke up I went and checked and it was cool-they were still alive and still had flesh.

MH: Which Star Wars character do you most identify with?
DJ: Lando Calrissian, because he's the one who is really cool and has the best dress sense.

MH: How has being in silverchair changed you?
DJ: It's hard to know really. It's hard to know how it has changed and of us as individuals because it's been part of our lives for so long. I don't know whether we have changed naturally or as a result of being in silverchair or both. Overall though, I think it has made me a bit more introverted.

MH: Do you feel you had to do a lot of your growing up in public?
DJ: Yes, I think that has got a lot to do with it just being a little more sceptic of peoples motives.

MH: Where is your favorite place to chill out?
DJ: At home in my living room or my bedroom with my dog.

MH: What was the last CD you bought?
DJ: Incords the second album by the Bangals.

MH: Tell me about your cure for jetlag...
DJ: I geneerlly take alot of sleeping tablets on the plane and set my watch to what ever time it is at the destination we are headed so I can try to adjust immediatly. Then pretty mcuh keep takeing the tablets whilest I am away. It really works.

MH: Do you regret doing the ver version of the Clash's London Burning on the Burning London: A tribute to the Clash?
DJ: No, I would only regret something that didn't have integrity behind it and wasnt sincere when we recorded it. It was done in the spirit of doing a version of a song that was an insperation for me. It was more just fun. It wasn't a desperate grasp for credibility.

MH: What is the most punk rock thing you have ever done?
DJ: When I was 11 years old,me and my friend went a sprayed the Grandstand in Newcastle (Sydney Aus.) And I wrote 'Sex Pistols' and he wrote 'AC/DC'. I have matured a bit since then and don't do anthing silly anymore.

MH: Would you raher go to a huge party thrown by your record company or stay in your hotel room?
DJ: Stay in my room! Those partys just feel to overcrowded and everyone wants to talk and talk about thing I don't want to talk about. I just find them too conjested and crazy. I like too talk about stuff like music and animal liberation. But most of the time I don't really want to talk at all.

MH: What is the best piece of advice you father ever gave you?
DJ: One time this guy wanted to fight me at school when I was about 13. My dad told me to get a pocket of loose change and when he came to fight me, to throw it in this face. It worked.

MH: When was the last time you were in an art gallery?
DJ: When we were in Amsterdamn about four months ago. I went to the Van Gogh Museum. I have been there before but I wanted to go again.

MH: When was the last time you were at a church?
DJ: When I was a pageboy at a wedding when I was six. I have my own beliefs and I don't have anything against people who belive in god or people who don't. I just don't go because I don't think it's very exciting.

MH: If you were god for five minutes, what would you do?
DJ: I could make every person more compassionate. I'm not saying that in a preaching manner, as in alot of way's I could be more compassionate. It is a facet of my personality I am improveing and I think other people should improve there levels of compassion towards people and animals.

MH: Have you ever had a guy come on to you?
DJ: Yeah,it happened twice. Once when I was at school-which was bad-and another which wasn't bad...this guy came up to me on the street and asked me to go out with him and started touching me in a sexual way. I just said "No thank you. I am going home."

MH: What is your idea of hell?
DJ: A day of interviews with the european press, I have nothing against them, it's just I can't understand what they aer talking about. And it maked me feel stupid.

MH: Do you belive in 'eye for an eye'?
DJ: In someways I do.But I don't think the death penalty is the answer. It depends on the motive of the murder. Some people kill for a reason I can understand. Even though I wouldn't do it my self. For example, if you parents had sexually abused you all your life and you murder them, you shouyld not be excused for the killing, but you should not have to suffer the death penalty either. If someone goes and murders a seven year old girl for the sake of it then I think they should get the death penatly as compared to keeping them in a jail is just a waste of tax payers money.

MH: Have you watched 'Pet Rescue' and cried?
DJ: "Not really, because the animals always get rescued. If they die I might."

MH: Who is the one person in a band you respect?
DJ: Someone I have alot of respect for is Ian Mckey from Minor Threat and Fugazi. But I never met hin so I don't know if he is a nice guy or not. We haven't met a band that has been fucked, everyone we met has been really nice. I haven't really developed any strong bond's with anyone in bands. I don't know why, I just haven't.
